Piano Lab Workbook

August 1, 2011

I’m excited to announce a new product that I hope will be a big benefit for teachers that have a piano lab in their studio.  This project was a lot more work than I anticipated but it is now ready just in time for the new school year.

The reproducible Piano Lab workbook includes instruction pages for over 20 computer programs:

Alfred Interactive Musician     Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory     Alfred Theory Games     Beethoven’s Baseball     Ear Training Expedition     Ear Training Coach     Garageband      Home Concert Extreme      Jumpstart Music      MidiSaurus     MusicLearningCommunity     Music Ace     Music Emozitron     Musition      Nutcracker     Piano Ace     PBJ     PianoHead     Piano Is Fun     PianoMouse Goes to Preschool      Piano Mouse Meets the Great Composers     PianoMouse Music Theory Fundamentals     Super Dooper Music Looper     Piano Wizard

It is over 40 pages and includes progress logs for students to keep track of their progress and/or scores for over a dozen programs that don’t already save their progress on the hard drive.  It also includes a section to add any worksheets you might have them use during their lab time.

If you want to save on ink and paper per student, you can take the file and easily create a separate instruction workbook that stays in the studio at the computer and a lab workbook for students to keep track of progress and written assignments.  I personally have a cubby hole for each of my students so that is where their lab workbook will be each week.

I have a few favorite books, DVD’s, etc… that you can find at Amazon that have served as resources in my group lessons and camps well. Thought I would share. Click on the link below…

Nutcracker Christmas Camp

October 28, 2010

Christmas time… holiday fun, parties, baking, celebrating, time with family and friends.  This is also the time that I used to get frustrated at how the practicing during this month would go way down.  Notice I said used to get frustrated?  I no longer get frustrated in December.  For over 10 years now, instead of our usual routine I hold Christmas camp in December.  Christmas camp is a 4-6 hour camp.  Students pick the session that works best for their schedule and then they get a break and enjoy their time getting ready for the holidays.  I always hold a “Practicing over the Holidays” contest to encourage them to play lots and lots of Christmas songs in December.  (I will post about this later)  Students (and teacher) return back in January refreshed and ready for the rest of the year.

My first Christmas camp that I put together was based on the Nutcracker Ballet.  Students learned the story of The Nutcracker, played activities centered around the music of the Nutcracker ballet, learned about Tchaikovsky, learned about different music forms and how to compose a suite.

Even if  you don’t do a separate Christmas camp in December, I would encourage you to at least hold a group lesson in December.  After all music camps are just longer group lessons.

Have a Musical and Merry Christmas this year!

You will find the following in your camp download:

-Nutcracker Christmas Camp Outline and Lesson Plans

-Visual tool teaching Musical Form

-Reminder Slips for parents

-Nutcracker Spin the Bottle Game

-Nutcracker Bingo

-A couple extra resources that I found that can be used how you see fit.

“What a terrific resource this is!” Nancy

Piano Olympics

August 15, 2010

Since 2002, every four years I hold Piano Olympics in the studio.  We begin in October and go until mid-April.  I hold quarterly group lessons and when I can I coordinate my group lessons with what we are doing with our yearly theme.  I have posted pictures and on my studio blog of the group lessons.  For our “Opening Ceremony” pictures and activities click here.  When it is time for our spring recital, students perform pieces representing different countries.  At the end of their performances they are presented with a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal.

While many studio’s do Piano Olympics in their studio (it is so much fun afterall!), I thought I would share my Piano Olympic rules and event sheet.  You can download this for free Piano Olympic Event Rules.

During each of our group lessons, students work a little bit in their Piano Olympics workbook.  I’ve had several teachers inquire if they could purchase the book, so I have made that available.  In the meantime, here are some sample pages you can view for free.  Piano Olympics Workbook Sample Pages
